Chef Roslyn Spence trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, but her biggest critic remains her mother, a 94-year-old self-taught cook for Hollywo
Mother-daughter chef duo Edith Bell and Roslyn Spence know a thing or two about food. Roslyn, who trained among the best chefs in the world at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, introduces us to her greatest mentor: her mother. At 94 years old, Edith Bell is still cooking, dancing, laughing and sharing stories of when she cooked for Hollywood’s biggest stars. Roslyn grew up watching her mom prepare meals for the likes of Muhammed Ali, Sammy Davis Jr., Marlon Brando, and Barbra Streisand, to name a few...
Although Roslyn shares a love of cooking with her mother, when the two are in the kitchen together, sparks fly. The collision of two big personalities and two very different experiences--the self-taught versus the classically trained—leaves Edith pointing at a plaque that sits on her kitchen counter which reads, “She Who Must Be Obeyed.” With a big Mardi Gras family party on the horizon, Roslyn prepares a plate of jambalaya that she hopes will demonstrate how well her mother’s lessons were passed on—judged by none other than Edith herself. Through their shared language of cuisine, more can be said in a plate of shrimp and grits than in words. This story reflects on the value of food, family, and of that special bond shared between mother and daughter.
